Legacy planning for homeless communities

Jackie presented research exploring the views of people with lived experience of homelessness about future care planning at the 9th Advance Care Planning Conference on the beautiful Gold Coast of Australia. There was a lot of interest in the project she is co-leading with Stella which is funded by the Auckland Medical Research Foundation. .

Associate Professor Jackie Robinson presenting at ACP-i 2025.

Her central message was that mainstream approaches to Advance Care Planning just do not work with this population. The context of homelessness means that articulating aspirations for the end of life is very difficult. Those aspirations also relate to many things that the rest of us take for granted, such as safe and warm shelter, access to food, and having family and friends who have the resources to be able to support us. On-going workshops have used art to support people to express their feelings and preferences about what matters to them now and when thinking about their end of life. We are looking forward to sharing further findings, including a co-created resource to support people experiencing homelessness with legacy planning

We were also fortunate to have the opportunity to see humpback whales migrating up the coast, as well as enjoy a sunny respite from our rainy Aotearoa Spring weather!
